Terms of Service
Last updated August 2026
These terms govern every use of Slatejack by clients and by listed trade businesses. Slatejack LLC operates the platform. By creating an account, booking a job or listing a business you accept these terms.
1. What Slatejack is
Slatejack LLC is a directory and record-keeping service. We introduce clients to independent trade businesses. We are not a contractor, employer, agent, broker, insurer or guarantor of any listed business, and we do not perform, schedule, supervise or inspect any work.
We hold no contractor's licence and we do not pull permits. Every job is performed under the licence of the business you hire, and every contract for work is between you and that business — Slatejack LLC is not a party to it.
Slatejack LLC is not responsible for the quality, completeness, timeliness, legality, safety or price of any work, nor for any injury, damage, loss or dispute that arises from it. Any claim about the work must be directed to the business that performed it.
2. Accounts
You must be 18 or older and provide accurate information. You are responsible for activity under your account and for keeping your credentials secure. We may suspend accounts that provide false information, abuse the platform or breach these terms.
3. Listings and optional verification
Businesses represent that they hold a current contractor licence and general liability insurance, and listings go live immediately on that representation. Businesses may optionally submit licence and insurance details for administrator review; approved submissions display a verified badge. We may suspend or remove any listing at any time, including for false representations.
Verification means we reviewed the information the business gave us at a point in time. It is not a warranty of skill, safety, solvency or current licence status. Clients should confirm licence status with the California Contractors State License Board before work begins.
4. Published rates are binding on the business
Every listed business must publish a rate card. By listing, the business agrees its published rates are binding for jobs booked through Slatejack, and that any charge beyond them requires the client's written approval obtained before the additional work is performed.
5. Rate snapshots
At the moment a booking request is submitted, Slatejack copies the business's live rate card onto the booking record together with the client's acknowledgement and a timestamp. Neither party can alter that snapshot, and every status change is written to an audit log. It is the reference record for any dispute.
Acknowledgement recorded on every booking: "I understand that Slatejack is an introduction service only. The rates shown above are published by the business and are binding on them for this job. Slatejack does not collect payment, is not a party to the work agreement, and is not liable for the final invoice. Any charge beyond these published rates requires my written approval before the work is performed."
6. Payment
Slatejack does not collect, hold, escrow, process or refund job payment. All payment for work flows directly between the client and the business, on the business's own terms and invoice.
The only money Slatejack collects is the monthly membership fee charged to listed businesses. See the Refund & Cancellation Policy.
7. Client responsibilities
Describe the job accurately, give safe access to the property, and approve any extra work in writing before it is performed. Keep your written approvals — they determine whether an extra charge is legitimate.
8. Overcharge reports and enforcement
Clients may report an invoice that exceeds the snapshot. We compare the invoice against the snapshot and any written approvals, ask the business to respond within five business days, and record the outcome. We may warn, downrank, suspend or permanently remove a listing.
We do not adjudicate the amount owed, order payment or issue refunds. Our enforcement affects the listing, not the invoice; the money dispute remains between the client and the business.
9. Reviews
Reviews may only be left by a client with a booking on record. Reviews must be truthful and free of unlawful, defamatory or personally identifying content. We may remove reviews that breach this, but we do not remove reviews simply because a business disagrees with them.
10. Limitation of liability
Slatejack is not liable for the quality, timeliness, legality or safety of any work, nor for any invoice, upcharge, change order or additional cost applied by a business. Any claim relating to the work or its price is between the client and the business.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Slatejack disclaims all implied warranties and is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages. Slatejack's total liability to any user is limited to the fees that user paid to Slatejack in the preceding three months.
11. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold Slatejack harmless from claims arising out of your use of the platform, your work, your invoicing, or your breach of these terms.
12. Changes and termination
We may update these terms and will post the revised version here with a new date. You may close your account at any time; we may suspend or close accounts that breach these terms.
13. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by California law. Disputes are resolved in the state or federal courts located in California, unless applicable consumer law gives you a different forum.
